JIMI DOES TOOTING GRANADA
A couple of years ago I published my research results on the Lifelines website, regarding the backstage photos Alec Byrne took at an unknown location.
I had a strong suspicion that the photos might have been taken at the Tooting Granada venue on 30 April 1967, the last night of the Walker Brothers UK tour.
I contacted Byrne’s representative Drew Evans and told him about my thoughts. Evans didn’t know where the photos were taken, but possibly because of my suggestion, he replied: “That shot of the Experience was taken prior to the Tooting gig (we think).”
(Byrne seems to have been a regular at the Granada in Tooting, as he also photographed Roy Orbison at the same venue in March 1967.)
A couple of months ago my dear friend Luigi Garuti was able to confirm my intuition. He found photos of the Walker Brothers backstage at the Tooting Granada, taken a year earlier on 27 April 1966. The walls in the dressing room are the same as the walls in the Byrne photos. We even see the same dressing room sink in both photos.
There is another photo, taken by Colin Neville Purvor, which I also attribute to the same date and location. It is the photo of Jimi reading Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde songbook. It seems this was also taken at the Tooting Granada on the same date, although I have not been able to convince Luigi yet.
With special thanks to Luigi Garuti for his excellent research job.
(Don’t forget where you read all the above first…)
